Abstract
This community service activity addressed the practice of coffee farmers in Seputih Village, Mayang District, Jember Regency, who sold Robusta coffee as whole cherries, including through transactions while the fruit was still on the tree, at approximately IDR 14,000 per kilogram. This practice limited opportunities to capture added value through postharvest handling. The activity aimed to improve farmers’ knowledge and practices in coffee postharvest handling and to strengthen farmer organization. Activities included coordination, extension sessions, discussions, and the introduction and use of a fruit pulper (kneuzer), drying facilities, and grading equipment. Following the activity, farmers began processing coffee cherries into green beans and selling the product according to quality. The reported green bean selling price ranged from IDR 45,000 to IDR 75,000 per kilogram, depending on quality. The activity also encouraged the formation of a small farmer group working to manage coffee gardens and postharvest handling collectively under a coffee farmer association (Gapoktan) supported by Perhutani. Processing and quality grading indicate an opportunity to obtain a higher selling price, although this should not be interpreted as an increase in net income because conversion yield and processing costs have not yet been calculated. Further mentoring is needed to improve quality consistency, production records, and collective marketing.
